Last weekend when I heard Zach talking about this sports blog I thought to myself "hmm, I like sports and I like writing, maybe I should get in on this." Of course, I have other interests which led to this mini conversation:
"So can I write about life instead of sports in some of my posts?" I asked Zach.
"No, you're only supposed to write about sports, kid."
I thought to myself "I guess that settles it, I can only write about sports." However, over the past week I've come to realize something: sports is life, or at least a part of it. Since the Chicago Bulls ended their title run, I've used sports as an escape. When watching the game, I can take a break from worrying about girls, work, potentially going back to school, and where my life went wrong. Besides, if my fellow bloggers decide that they don't want my post about how girls are more sex-craved than men, I can delete it.
However, I can interject sports analogies into many different topics. For instance, take this girl I had in my Geography class Sophomore year of college. She was thin, appeared to have a nice body but she had a ton of acne. As I sat there listening to a combination of our TA trying to talk and the frat brothers in the back acting like stereotypical frat brothers, I would sometimes think about how this girl would be cute if she had clearer skin. Two years later I had her in another class and she was looking hot. She had no acne and her body was still looking good. In between bouts of kicking myself, I thought about how this situation could apply to sports, namely our favorite coach Kirk Ferentz. Many Iowa recruits have come to campus with very few accolades and performed admirably. They come onto campus as two star recruits and, because of the great coaching staff and mentality of the program, end up becoming four star players. This girl was much the same way. She came into my Geography class as a two star and, through hard work, was able to become a four star girl.
I hope this introduction post sheds a little light on me as a person. Admittedly, I should probably keep the girl/sports analogies for my own blog, but I like the fact that I get to post these ramblings on a site that features some great sports fans and overall great guys. Going over to Zach's to watch a Hawkeye victory over Penn St. has helped me get through a week of picking up trash and pulling weeds in beautiful Rock Island. Then, the week of the 15th, I will be insanely impatient for the four days I'll have to work before leaving for Ann Arbor.
Dustin asked me to do some picks and since I'm at a friend's apartment and don't want to monopolize the computer all morning, I'll just do the games I can remember:
Iowa 24 Penn St 17
Oregon 31 Stanford 28
Bears 21 Giants 20
Packers 42 Lions 10
